Central venous catheter-associated infections are preventable, and quality improvement interventions can improve adherence to infection prevention measures. To determine which interventions are most effective, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 43 studies that reported infection rates in adult intensive care units before and after implementation of interventions between 1995 and 2012.
Among the 12 quality improvement interventions assessed, the most common were education, feedback, checklists, prepackaging of materials, clinical reminders, and compliance monitoring.
