Diazepam is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of status epilepticus in children; lorazepam is not. In a double-blind, randomized trial, investigators compared the efficacy and safety of intravenous (IV) diazepam with IV lorazepam in children 3 months to <18 years of age presenting to one of 11 pediatric emergency departments with tonic-clonic status epilepticus.
Of 273 children (median age, 3 years), 140 received diazepam (0.2 mg/kg; maximum dose, 8 mg), and 133 received lorazepam (0.1 mg/kg; maximum dose, 4 mg).
