Prior Adenomas, Villous Adenomas, and Family History Associated with Interval Cancer

Interval cancer is cancer occurring after a colonoscopy that did not diagnose cancer and before the next scheduled colonoscopy. Factors previously shown to be associated with the development of interval cancer include proximal cancer location, microsatellite instability, hypermethylation, performance by a colonoscopist with a low adenoma detection rate (ADR), low polypectomy rate, or low cecal intubation rate, performance by a non-gastroenterologist, and performance of colonoscopy for the indication of positive fecal occult blood test.
