In 2006, Massachusetts expanded Medicaid, provided subsidies for private insurance, and created an individual mandate as part of statewide health reform. Access to care, self-reported physical and mental health, use of preventive services, and functional status have all improved in the ensuing years. In this study, researchers evaluated whether healthcare reform in Massachusetts has lowered early mortality. They used propensity scores and a model that was adjusted for multiple factors including age, sex, race, income, and employment status to assess mortality within Massachusetts versus that of non-reform states for 5 years before and 4 years after Massachusetts healthcare reform.
