Recent phase III trials using sofosbuvir and ribavirin for 12 weeks without interferon demonstrated a high sustained virologic response (SVR) rate for hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2 infection (97%) and a reasonable SVR rate (56%) for HCV genotype 3 infection (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Apr 23 2013). The current, industry-funded, open-label study evaluates the utility of extending treatment duration to 24 weeks to improve SVR in HCV genotype 3 infection and verifies the SVR in genotype 2 with 12 weeks of therapy.
Treatment-naive or treatment-experienced patients with HCV genotypes 2 or 3 infection received sofosbuvir (400 mg once daily) and ribavirin (1000–1200 mg daily) for 12 weeks (genotype 2) or 24 weeks (genotype 3). Of 419 patients enrol…
