Sofosbuvir and Ribavirin: 24 Weeks for HCV Genotype 3 Infection

Achieving high rates of success requires 24 weeks of therapy for genotype 3 infection versus only 12 weeks for genotype 2.

Recent phase III trials using sofosbuvir and ribavirin for 12 weeks without interferon demonstrated a high sustained virologic response (SVR) rate for hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2 infection (97%) and a reasonable SVR rate (56%) for HCV genotype 3 infection (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Apr 23 2013). The current, industry-funded, open-label study evaluates the utility of extending treatment duration to 24 weeks to improve SVR in HCV genotype 3 infection and verifies the SVR in genotype 2 with 12 weeks of therapy.
