After ART initiation, particularly in patients with low CD4-cell counts, immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome may occur; unmasked lymphoma is one possible presentation.
The incidence of lymphomas — both Hodgkin (HL) and non-Hodgkin (NHL) — is increased during the first 6 months after initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). When immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) reveals an HIV-associated condition that was not evident before ART initiation, it is classified as “unmasking.” To further define unmasking lymphoma IRIS, investigators studied individuals with NHL or HL diagnosed at Center for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) sites between 1996 and 2011.
Among the 24,203 HIV-infected patients in the CNICS database, 482 (2%) received a diagnosis of lymphoma during the study period; 56 (12%) of them met the unmasking lymphoma IRIS case definition. Twelve of these 56 pa…
