Women with chronic health conditions face excess risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. To explore whether having a chronic condition affects likelihood of receiving prescription contraception, researchers analyzed data from 11,649 commercially insured Michigan women who made two or more outpatient visits between 2004 and 2009. Although women with chronic conditions made over three times as many office visits and were more likely to be screened for cervical cancer than women without such conditions, they were 15% less likely to receive prescription contraception irrespective of age, number of visits, or receipt of cervical cancer screening.
