Dementia or cognitive impairment is a frequent problem in patients with Parkinson disease (PD); dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is another disorder related to PD. Cholinergic and glutaminergic strategies have been studied for efficacy in treating these PD-related disorders. The current researchers examined the evidence for these treatments through meta-analysis and applied trial sequence analysis to determine the strength of the results.
Of 909 reports of studies initially identified, 109 full-text articles of independent studies were reviewed, but only 10 placebo-controlled trials (donepezil, 5; rivastigmine, 2; memantine, 3) met criteria for inclusion.
