The controversy continues over whom to screen and treat for hypothyroidism during pregnancy. To evaluate the efficacy of targeted screening, Swedish investigators used data and blood samples (obtained at routine ultrasound screening between 17 and 19 weeks' gestation) in a retrospective cohort study of 5254 pregnant women in Uppsala County. From 2009 through 2011, 891 of these women were screened because of personal histories of thyroid dysfunction (with or without ongoing thyroid hormone replacement), family histories of thyroid dysfunction, goiter, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and other autoimmune diseases.
