Because there is no defined therapeutic target in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), cytotoxic chemotherapy remains the backbone of adjuvant therapy and regimens for advanced disease. Recent reports have suggested that platinum salts may be effective in TNBC, particularly in patients with BRCA1/2-induced tumors. In the neoadjuvant setting, standard anthracycline-taxane regimens lead to pathological complete remission (pCR) in 30% to 50% of patients. A recent area of much debate is what magnitude of improvement in pCR will translate into an improvement in disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).
