Stressful life events negatively affect glycemic control in youth with type 1 diabetes, but whether they have a similar effect in those with type 2 diabetes is unknown. Researchers analyzed data collected in the final year of a longitudinal trial comparing three treatments (metformin alone, metformin plus rosiglitazone, or metformin plus lifestyle modification) in 699 ethnically diverse youth with type 2 diabetes (age range, 10–17; body-mass index, 85th percentile). Outcome measures included treatment failure (defined as loss of glycemic control or inability to be weaned off insulin), hypertension, dyslipidemia, medication adherence, depressive symptoms, stressful life events, and quality of life.
