Insulin Pump Lowers HbA1c Better Than Basal-Bolus Injections in Type 2 Diabetes

For patients with hard-to-control high glycosylated hemoglobin levels, insulin pumps were effective.

Although insulin pumps are used widely in managing patients with advanced type 2 diabetes, studies in which pump therapy was compared with multiple daily insulin injections in this population have been small and inconclusive.

In a multinational study sponsored by a pump manufacturer, researchers recruited 495 adults whose type 2 diabetes was poorly controlled despite multiple daily insulin injections. Participants underwent a standardized basal–bolus dose-optimization program for 2 months. A total of 331 patients completed the program with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA_1c) levels between 8.0% and 12.0% (mean, 9.0%) and were randomized to pump therapy or continued multiple daily insulin injections with ongoing dose titration.
