Introduction of 7-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (PCV7) in 2000 led to significant (>50%) reductions in the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the U.S. (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med May 9 2003). However, IPD caused by nonvaccine serotypes (specifically 19A) increased, prompting development of PCV13. In a population-based observational study, investigators examined the effect of PCV13 among children aged ≤5 years in Massachusetts before (2007–2009; 168 cases) and after (2010–2012; 85 cases) introduction of PVC13.
