Although an estimated 25% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) are of childbearing age, the few data available on maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnant women with PBC show conflicting results.
In this retrospective study, researchers at a liver center in Toronto assessed outcomes in women who were pregnant at the time of PBC diagnosis or became pregnant after PBC diagnosis. Detailed medical data were reviewed, as well as self-reported data gathered by questionnaire regarding previous pregnancies.
Of 210 women included, 32 were pregnant at the time of PBC diagnosis (17 patients) or became pregnant after PBC diagnosis (15 patients). The total number of pregnancies was 50. Among these 32 patients, outcomes were as follows:
