Since 2004, the U.S. Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network has maintained a prospective registry of patients with suspected drug-induced liver injury; cases are investigated thoroughly to determine whether a particular drug is the likely offending agent. Through 2012, the registry included 1188 cases; the 22 cases representing probable or definite statin hepatotoxicity are the subject of this report.
Nineteen of the 22 patients were symptomatic at time of presentation. Fifteen patients were jaundiced, with bilirubin levels ≥2.5 mg/dL. The most commonly implicated statins were atorvastatin (8 cases), simvastatin (5), and rosuvastatin (4).
