In a secondary analysis of children with blunt head injury presenting to centers in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) from 2004 to 2006, investigators assessed risk for intracranial injury among those aged <24 months with scalp hematomas but no other signs or symptoms of intracranial injury. The analysis included 2998 children who presented within 24 hours of injury with Glasgow Coma Scale scores of 14 to 15; children with multisystem trauma or suspected abuse were included.
