The diagnosis of covert hepatic encephalopathy (CHE; formerly known as minimal hepatic encephalopathy) requires complex psychometric testing that is not practical for use in a clinical setting.
In the current longitudinal study, investigators assessed the predictive value of demographic factors and items from a self-administered, validated, quality-of-life questionnaire, the Sickness Impact Profile (SIP), in diagnosing CHE. Patients with cirrhosis at a single center underwent cognitive tests to identify CHE and took the SIP questionnaire (including 136 questions across 12 topics) at study enrollment, 6 months, and 12 months.
