Elderly people frequently report a decline in memory. These complaints about memory in some cases might be early signs of cognitive decline and, possibly, future dementia. To determine the risk for cognitive decline after subjective memory complaints, researchers prospectively tracked 531 cognitively intact adults (mean baseline age, 73). Participants reported annually whether they perceived changes in memory since their last visit and underwent objective cognitive and physical examinations at periodic intervals.
