Emergency department (ED) patients with atrial fibrillation are at risk for undesirable events, including repeat ED visits, stroke, and death. The Risk Estimator Decision Aid for Atrial Fibrillation (RED-AF) score was designed to predict the risk for such events within 30 days. It assigns points for each of 12 variables, including age, sex, coexisting disease, smoking, home use of diuretics and β-blockers, peripheral edema on physical exam, and ventricular rate control.
In an observational study, researchers assessed the score's predictive value in 497 patients. Of these, 120 (24%) had at least one undesirable event within 30 days. At the optimal RED-AF threshold, the score had a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 19% for predicting any…
