Sleep Deprivation Is Bad for Adenoma Detection

Adenoma detection rates (ADRs) have been shown to decline as the workday proceeds, but few studies have examined the potential impact of sleep deprivation.

In the current study, researchers examined the effect of taking call at night and its resultant sleep deprivation on adenoma detection rate the next day. They identified 447 colonoscopies performed by gastroenterologists who were on call the previous night, 126 performed by gastroenterologists who completed on-call emergency procedures the previous night, and 8734 control colonoscopies.
