Gastric cancer is a major cause of cancer mortality. Because population surveillance with endoscopy is resource-intensive, targeted surveillance is needed to achieve cost-effectiveness.
To assist in risk stratification, investigators in Taiwan developed a nomogram using demographic and clinical data to predict the risk for gastric cancer 1 and 2 years after hospitalization for peptic ulcer. Using Taiwan's national health insurance database, they identified 278,898 patients hospitalized with peptic ulcers during an 8-year period and assessed development of gastric cancer, which occurred in 1269 patients during the 2 years after discharge.
