The incidence of acute myocardial infarction (MI) is increased in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Italian investigators speculated that in vivo markers of platelet activation might be detected during the early phase of hospitalization in CAP patients with signs of MI. To test this hypothesis, the researchers conducted a prospective study involving 278 patients (173 men; mean age, 70) hospitalized for CAP at four Italian sites from October 2011 to April 2013. Of these patients, 36% had histories of coronary artery disease, 12% had a previous stroke, 24% had diabetes, 35% had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and 7% had peripheral vascular disease.
