A key question for patients and providers regarding treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the clinical benefit of therapy. To explore this issue, investigators further analyzed the survival of a previously studied population of patients with chronic HCV monoinfection and either bridging fibrosis or cirrhosis. In this new analysis, they compared the life expectancy of participants who did — or did not — achieve a sustained virologic response (SVR) with that of the general population in the Netherlands.
Data were analyzed for 530 patients who had been treated with interferon-containing regimens at any of five hepatology centers in Europe and Canada between 1990 and 2003. Of the 192 patients who attained SVR, 13 died. The 1…
