Men have higher risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), especially at an earlier age, than women, but women have similar or higher risks for stroke and heart failure (HF) than men. In this prospective population-based study, researchers in the Netherlands determined lifetime risks for cardiovascular (CV) disease and its first manifestations in 8400 older adults (age, ≥55; 61% women) who were free of CV disease at baseline.
During follow-up for as long as 21 years, overall risk for CV disease was similar in men and women (67% and 66%, respectively). However, risk for first manifestation of CV disease differed.
