From late August through October 2014, 160 cases of autochthonous dengue fever were reported in Japan, where local transmission was last documented 70 years ago. The National Center for Global Health and Medicine confirmed 19 of the new cases (median patient age, 33). None of the 19 patients reported any overseas travel during the preceding 3 months. Fifteen had recently visited Tokyo's Yoyogi Park; the other 4 had visited other Tokyo parks.
Sixteen of the patients were hospitalized; 1 with a history of dengue fever (in 2006) met WHO criteria for dengue hemorrhagic fever. All patients recovered without sequelae.
