A task force of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) solicits suggestions about tests and treatments that are considered to be unnecessary, potentially harmful, and costly. In December 2013, after examining input from the ASH community, the task force released its first Choosing Wisely recommendations on five common hematologic tests and treatments to avoid (NEJM JW Oncol Hematol Dec 9 2013).
Now, for its second Choosing Wisely campaign, the task force selected 10 of 73 unique items for examination by a systematic literature review and released the following five new recommendations:
