Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) can occasionally occur from lesions that are not amenable to endoscopic, radiologic, or surgical intervention. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) can be used to visualize some of these lesions and identify the bleeding vessels. Investigators at the Mayo Clinic recently reported their experience using EUS-guided hemostasis to treat a variety of bleeding lesions (e.g., stromal tumors, vascular malformations, Dieulafoy lesions, masses or polyps, invasive malignancies) in the upper gastrointestinal tract or colon. Each of the 17 patients involved had experienced treatment failure or been deemed an unsuitable candidate for standard therapies.
