The relationship between energy drink consumption and risky alcohol use is well known among U.S. college students. A new analysis provides information on this relationship among youth aged 15 to 17 years.
Data were from a national telephone survey of 3342 youth aged 15 to 23 years. Among 1508 respondents aged 15 to 17 years, 200 (13%) had consumed an energy drink in the past 7 days and were more likely than youth who had not consumed an energy drink in the past 7 days to have ever used alcohol (72% vs. 43%), to binge drink (consume ≥6 drinks in a row; 34% vs. 15%), and to score positive on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (adult cutoff score of ≥8, 27% vs. 14%; adolescent cutoff score of ≥4, 31% vs. 14%).
