Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently have episodes of staring and reduced responsiveness, as well as an increased incidence of seizures. In a retrospective database review, researchers examined findings of the first electroencephalogram (EEG) in 92 Australian children with ASD (77 with autism, 15 with Asperger syndrome) who were referred for evaluation of staring episodes.
Children's mean age was 7 years 5 months (range, 20 months to 16 years); 72 were boys. EEGs were normal in 76 children (82%), and none of the abnormal EEG recordings were compatible with the diagnosis of absence seizures. EEG abnormalities were considered significant in 3 children.
