Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality — particularly among older individuals, who require more-frequent courses of antibiotics — and has a high recurrence rate. Medical management of CDI can be expensive and usually involves additional antibiotics, with further alteration of the gut microbiome. Data from animal infection models and preliminary data from humans suggest that hyperimmune bovine colostrum (HBC) may be effective for both prevention and treatment of CDI. To further examine the safety and efficacy of this preparation, researchers in the U.S. and South Korea conducted a study involving piglets with diarrhea caused by CDI.
