Because negotiating condom use is often difficult, hormonal contraception plays a critical role in preventing undesired pregnancy and its associated risks (which include elevated risk for HIV acquisition [PLoS Med 2014 Feb 25]). To assess whether various hormonal contraceptives are associated with differing risk for HIV acquisition, investigators conducted an updated meta-analysis including 12 observational studies among women in sub-Saharan Africa.
