Effective and safe treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is key in the control of tuberculosis worldwide. The current recommended treatment for children with LTBI is a 9-month course of daily isoniazid. A recent trial showed that 3 months of a once-weekly combination of isoniazid and rifapentine is effective for treatment of LTBI in patients aged 12 years and older. To evaluate its safety and efficacy in younger children, researchers randomized more than 1000 children aged 2 to 17 years at 29 sites worldwide (including the U.S. and Canada) to once-weekly combined isoniazid and rifapentine for 12 weeks or daily isoniazid for 9 months.
