An estimated 20% to 30% of homeless populations have severe mental illness, and 30% to 50% have substance use disorders; small studies suggest that ≤80% show some neurocognitive impairment. To learn more, researchers in Canada conducted a large-scale, multisite study of 1500 homeless or precariously housed adults with severe psychiatric disorders (mean age, 41; 67% men; 51% white); 51% were homeless for ≥3 years.
At baseline, 46% had current diagnoses of psychosis, 53% had major depression, 45% had alcohol use disorders, and 54% had substance use disorders; 46% reported histories of one or more severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs; i.e., loss of consciousness lasting ≥24 hours).
