Because high-grade serous ovarian cancers seem to arise from the fallopian tubes, interest in salpingectomy's potential to prevent this disease continues to grow. In a retrospective cohort study in Sweden, investigators used nationwide data to identify women who had undergone hysterectomy with or without bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO; 98,000 and 37,000, respectively), tubal sterilization (82,000), or salpingectomy (34,000) for benign indications between 1973 and 2009, then compared their subsequent risk for ovarian cancer with risk in >5,000,000 women who had not undergone these surgeries.
