In-depth analyses of adolescent sleep patterns are limited. Using data from national Monitoring the Future surveys, investigators studied trends in self-reported sleep patterns among 272,000 adolescents from 1991 to 2012. The survey asked how often the adolescents got at least 7 hours of sleep and how often they got less sleep than they should.
During the study period, sleep decreased for all ages except 19-year-olds; declines were greatest in the 1990s and among 15-year-olds (10% absolute decrease). Overall, 13-year-olds were more likely than 18-year-olds to report regularly getting at least 7 hours sleep (approximately 63% vs. 33%) and enough sleep (approximately 40% vs. 22%).
