In the U.S., approximately one third of all patients with HIV infection are coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV-related morbidity and mortality is substantial in this patient population. Newer treatment regimens that are free of interferon (IFN), ribavirin (RBV), or both are promising, but their role in treating coinfected patients has not been well defined. Two recent open-label studies now add to our understanding of their efficacy and tolerability in this population.
