Nasoenteral feeding is often indicated in hospitalized patients. Because blind passage of a feeding tube beyond the pylorus is problematic, different methods of guiding the feeding tube have been used, including fluoroscopy, endoscopy, and bedside electromagnetic (EM) guidance. The success of these various approaches to tube placement is assessed in the current systematic review.
Researchers reviewed studies published after 2006 (when EM guidance became available) and identified 28 studies that reported the success rates of one or more placement method in 4056 patients. Some patients had tubes placed multiple times.
