Skin and soft-tissue infections are extremely common and can be recurrent. For skin abscesses, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a predominant pathogen in many areas of the U.S.; for cellulitis, its role is less certain. To compare clindamycin with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) for the treatment of uncomplicated skin infections, investigators conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical trial at four medical centers located in areas where community-acquired MRSA is endemic.
