The devastating Ebola epidemic in Africa has claimed >10,000 lives so far and is only slowly abating. Occasionally healthcare workers from the U.S. and Europe caring for Ebola virus (EBOV)–infected patients in Africa have acquired the infection themselves and been evacuated for advanced medical care. This highly contagious and often deadly infection has raised concerns regarding the appropriateness and safety of providing life-saving or life-sustaining measures to such patients.
