Endoscopy is indicated in patients with substantial acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). The success of endoscopic diagnosis and therapy are limited if retained blood obscures the field, which often necessitates a second endoscopy. Efforts to clear blood from the stomach before endoscopy are not routinely used unless poor visibility is anticipated. Now, investigators in South Korea have prospectively studied adults hospitalized for UGIB to determine factors associated with poor endoscopic visibility and create a predictive model.
