The ongoing Ebola epidemic has spurred efforts to develop a vaccine (NEJM JW Infect Dis Jan 2015 and N Engl J Med 2014 Nov 26; [e-pub]). Now, investigators in China have published the results of a phase I, double-blind trial testing the safety and immunogenicity of a novel recombinant adenovirus type-5 vector–based vaccine based on the 2014 Zaire Guinea epidemic strain.
In this partially industry-supported trial, 120 healthy, HIV-negative adults were randomized to receive placebo or high- or low-dose vaccine by intramuscular injection. At baseline, approximately 60% of the participants had pre-existing adenovirus type-5 neutralizing antibody titers >1:200.
