Vertigo, dizziness, imbalance, and abnormal vestibular ocular reflex often occur after a concussion. To determine if these vestibular deficits at initial examination are associated with delayed recovery from youth concussion, investigators conducted a retrospective cohort study of 247 patients (age range, 5–18 years) with confirmed concussion referred to a pediatric hospital sports medicine clinic.
The researchers ascertained the presence of vestibular signs at the initial examination following concussion and determined the influence of vestibular deficits on recovery. Results were as follows:
On initial examination, 81% of patients had vestibular abnormalities (80% had gait abnormalities, and 69% had gaze instability).
