Although generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is usually regarded as having early onset, many cases first appear in late life. To identify life events and health factors that might be linked to generalized anxiety, researchers in France conducted a 12-year, prospective, industry-supported study, in which 1568 individuals without GAD or dementia at baseline (minimum age, 65; mean age, 73) were examined every few years.
During the study period, 8.4% of participants developed incident GAD, which was a first episode for 80%.
