Teaching lesion recognition and detection is an important aspect of colonoscopy training, but measuring the adenoma detection rate (ADR) during fellowship is complicated because supervisors typically correct poor technique and poor detection, and the ADR reflects the supervisor's performance.
In the current report from the Netherlands, the ADRs of seven fellows were described and compared with their ADRs after training was completed and they were entered in practice. In the Dutch system, a fellow's first 100 procedures are fully supervised, followed by supervision as requested by the fellow. The first 100 supervised colonoscopies were excluded in this study.
