Bacterial infections are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis, and recurrent infections are particularly associated with poor outcomes. To identify risk factors for subsequent bacterial infection in patients with cirrhosis hospitalized with an infection, researchers followed 188 patients for 6 months after hospital discharge from 1 of 12 tertiary medical centers in North America. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and liver-specific data were collected during hospitalization.
At 6 months postdischarge, 45% of patients had developed subsequent infections (26% at the same site as the primary infection), 27% had died, 14% had received a liver transplant, and 59% were alive without a liver transplant. Independent …
