Decades ago, psychological stress was thought to increase the risk for peptic ulcer disease (PUD). Since that time, other etiologies for PUD have been identified, leaving the role of stress unclear.
To address this issue, investigators retrospectively reviewed the psychological resilience scores of men who were assessed for military conscription in Sweden between 1969 and 1976, then used the National Patient Register to identify PUD diagnoses in this 233,093-person cohort between 1985 and 2009 (i.e., at ages 28–57). Individuals with PUD prior to 1985 were excluded.
