Expect Higher Adenoma Detection after Left-Sided vs. Right-Sided Colectomy for Colon Cancer

The incidence of recurrent or new adenomas during postpolypectomy surveillance is higher after resection of adenomas found at baseline in the proximal colon compared with the distal colon. In a retrospective study, Italian investigators retrospectively evaluated rates of adenoma detection in 441 patients undergoing second surveillance colonoscopy after segmental resection for colon cancer.

In patients with a left-colon segmental resection, the adenoma detection rate in the second surveillance examination was 30%; after right-colon resection, the adenoma detection rate was 19% (odds ratio, 1.8; 95% confidence interval, 1.2–2.9).
