In small clinical trials, D-cycloserine, an antibiotic that is a partial agonist of glycine modulatory sites within the NMDA receptor, has enhanced extinction-based treatments for social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Preclinical studies have suggested that D-cycloserine also enhances extinction to alcohol cues, but findings have been mixed in clinical settings. These investigators studied how D-cycloserine affected cue-initiated craving in 30 treatment-seeking patients with alcohol use disorders who had shown increases in craving in response to alcohol cues.
