Adalimumab was more effective and acted more rapidly than methotrexate, but methotrexate is less expensive.
Treatment options for moderate to severe psoriasis usually require systemic medications. Although a number of reports evaluate the safety, efficacy, and mechanism of action of individual systemic agents relative to placebo, comparisons between systemic agents are uncommon. In this single-center, assessor-blind, randomized study, investigators compared methotrexate to adalimumab in 30 patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis.
Over the 16-week treatment period, more adalimumab recipients than methotrexate recipients achieved PASI 75 scores (67% vs. 27%), and the adalimumab group responded more rapidly.
