Previous endocarditis prophylaxis (EP) guidelines recommended liberal use of prophylactic antibiotics before dental and other invasive procedures for patients with conditions associated with increased endocarditis risk. Because of questionable efficacy and potential risks of such antibiotic use, revised U.S. and European EP guidelines — issued in 2007 and 2009, respectively — restricted prophylaxis to patients with the highest endocarditis risk.
